Sorry to hear about that. Sometimes a business owner has to consider adding to their business in order to stay in business. My post above has some suggestions. ;-) <3

I think ALL bookstores should sell coffee and food and maybe even art too! How about adding some live music?!
Just a thought. I used to dream about having a place like this until a friend got me thinking how much work, owning your own business is!

In reply to <a href="https://rachellegardner.com/if-barnes-and-noble-closes/#comment-442205">Lori Schafer</a>.

I, for one, AM upset about the local home video business being gone. It makes it very difficult to get a particular movie and even worse to get it in a timely manner. I am glad I only substitute teach now as I showed movies for many of the themes that I taught. The last time I wanted to show a movie, it was nowhere to be found.

I recently had a book event at a lovely bookstore called Left Bridge Book Shop in Brockport, NY. It is not a conglomerate OR a chain. They serve their audience and serve their authors. I couldn't have asked for a better reception from anywhere else.

If we are lucky, maybe more of these independent bookstores will start popping up that support US independent authors!

My debut novel “Secrets & Lies in El Salvador” is a/b an American girl in war-torn El Salvador: http://tinyurl.com/klxbt4y

My husband made a video for my novel. He wrote the song too:

In reply to <a href="https://rachellegardner.com/if-barnes-and-noble-closes/#comment-442192">Rachelle Gardner</a>.

I know this is an old post, but if this is still getting readers, it is worth noting that I, too, am guilty of not buying many books at bookstores. When I started my MFA (in 2005) I tried to find my textbooks in local bookstore(s) - there was one at that time. I also checked with the library, but usually they had an outdated version of what I needed.

Once I signed up for Amazon, all bets were off. In fact, it became such an addiction (i.e. buying books I would never read) that I finally had to drop the "Buy with 1 click" button.

On the other hand, since I published my novel at the end of Feb., B&N has been especially helpful by having events in their bookstores. In fact, I have another one this Sunday at a third B&N that is within 60 miles of my home.

We are fortunate that the one chain bookstore that has survived Amazon is one that tries to have events for their authors, so it is in our best interest to go there often and buy books often.

Let's hope we can keep this one in business!

I cherish Barnes & Noble, and adoration perusing in book shops by and large. I think distributers have driven general society into option purchasing procedures by limiting the sorts of books that get distributed.
No argument at all. Well, I could quibble on a few random facts here and there, but yeah - overall, a well thought out piece.

B&N is probably going to close, eventually. Their business model does not work. They are losing money. They will continue to lose money, likely more each year than the year before. Sooner or later, the plug will be pulled.

And life will go on. Publishing will adapt. New bookstores will appear. Online bookselling is booming, and will continue to do so.

The people who will be hurt worst by B&N closing will basically be the stockholders of the five or so biggest publishing companies (who will see major sales hits as a result), and the handful of authors whose books got expensive paid placement in the front of B&N stores.

For everyone else? We'll adapt, and move on. Not really a big deal.

I'll miss their nicely-bound journals and elaborate bookmarks if they fold.

With regards to books, I haven't bought one from B&N in a couple years, since I realized that for one hard copy that would cost about $20-$25, I could get AT LEAST three e-books, or 10-12 e-books if I bought those for $1.99. It would be strange not having a massive bookstore in our downtown though :/

I really don't care if they close. Their employees are unhelpful and rude, and their stores are filled with more "gifts" than books. In the B and N near my home, they took away all the chairs that had been scattered around the store. They don't want people to browse or linger. I adored working at the long-gone Brentano's on Fifth Avenue NYC many years ago, but that was then. I still enjoy the indie bookstores, because they actually sell books and hire people who know books. (Malaprops in Asheville, for example.)
